While this hint will work as stated, it's pretty much incorrect usage of launchctl for the purpose of the hint.

launchctl load...loads the FTP service into launchd's database of services. When you do an unload, you are telling launchd to not manage it anymore.

So a better way to do this--probably the proper way--is to first issue the command to load the service:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

Then, if you'd like to stop FTP, issue this command:

sudo launchctl stop com.apple.ftpd

And if you decide you'd like to bring it back up, use this command:

sudo launchctl start com.apple.ftpd

If you'd like for launchd to forget about FTP, that is when you would run this:

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

The hint as-is will work, but seems a little counter-productive to make launchd remember and forget about FTP all the time.

When you run a command from a UNIX or UNIX-like shell, the shell looks for the executable file using the directories listed in your PATH variable as a map. For convenience, adding directories to this environment variable means you don’t have to go hunting for a file each time you run it. Following these directions will allow you to add a directory to the search PATH.

To change your path, you must edit the .profile file in your home directory. If you are comfortable using the vi editor, you probably don’t need to read any further. If not, then you can use TextEdit to edit your .profile.

The default .profile is fairly short. The .profile is read when you open a Terminal window and each line is executed just like typing a command into the Terminal window. While this is handy because you can make any available command run whenever you drop to a shell, we’re concerned with changing an environment variable, PATH.

In your editor, find the line that starts with export PATH= and give it a look to make sure it doesn’t already contain the directory path you’re going to add. Sometimes the PATH variable can get lengthy, but chances are yours just has a few directories separated by colons, perhaps something like this:

export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH

There are a few things to note before making changes. The format of this line is important. The use of spaces in this command, or their lack, matters. In particular, there cannot be spaces around the equals sign or between any of the directories. If there are spaces in the directory name you want to add, you’ll need to escape the space by preceeding it with a \backslash or by putting the path in quotes (export PATH=”/path/here”).

The export= keyword in front of that line has a very specific purpose. Defining a variable without exporting it makes it available only to the current shell, not to any subsequent shells. You may think to yourself that you don’t plan to make any subsequent shells, but this happens whenever you run a shell script. If the PATH variable was not exported, when you run a shell script, the PATH would no longer exist and it is possible that the script would fail.

The $PATH at the end of the example above tacks the previous value of the variable (if it exists) onto the end of the PATH. By default, this will add ‘:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin’ to the end of the PATH for you which is useful because most everything you run from the command line lives there.

So, to add a new directory to the path, simply add it to the existing PATH line in .profile being careful to separate it from other directories there with colons and careful not to introduce unwanted spaces (everything after the space will be ignored). For example, to add the directory /mightyq/bin to the PATH shown above, the line could become any of the following examples:

export PATH=/mightyq/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/mightyq/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH:/mightyq/bin

Note that in the third example the new directory is added to the end of the PATH. You have the ability to optimize the searches your shell will do on your behalf each time you run a command by organizing your PATH logically. Putting less frequently used or really massive directories later in the path may give you a little performance boost (although these days things are pretty fast, so you have to be a little anal to really enjoy this).

If you don’t need a directory in your path, you can reverse the process by deleting the unwanted directory still taking care to preserve the no spaces, colon separation rules.

One last note, to test the change you made, you can use the echo command, but you need to make the shell reload the .profile first. Assuming you are in your home directory (if not, running ‘cd’ without any options will take you there), run these commands:

. ./.profile echo $PATH

The first is a neat little command in that it shows three uses or interpretations of the period in a single line. The first . is a shortcut to cause the shell to ’source’ or load the contents of the subsequent file as itself, in the manner that the shell uses when you login to a system or start a Terminal window. If you simply executed these commands like a shell script (bash .profile, for example) you would start a new shell, that shell would get the variable set, and at the end of running the .profile script, that new shell would cease to exist and the newly defined variables would be relegated to the missing sock universe.

The second period means the current working directory. It’s not compulsory in any way in this command, but it’s habit from explaining the dots to folks, so I type it all the time now. In this context, you could also use ~/.profile as ~ explicitly means your home directory.

The last dot causes the .profile to be hidden from view in a normal directory listing or Finder view. It doesn’t change the file in any other way, it just make it invisible and de-clutters your directories. To see hidden files, you can use ‘ls -a’ and you might be surprised by what you find.

SafeNet SoftRemoteLt on Windows 7

At our company we use SafeNets SoftRemoteLT VPN solution for secure communication with our DB servers.
In Windows XP and Vista this works fine.

Since the release of Windows 7 RC I’ve tried to get SoftRemoteLt working but have had no luck.
That is until now…

In this post I will show you how to configure Windows 7 and Virtual Windows XP Mode to route VPN traffic through XP.

First you need to make sure you’ve got the prerequisits:
(Instructions for prerequisits are not covered by this post.)

Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate
Intel® Virtualization Technology or AMD-V™ feature is enabled in BIOS
Windows Virtual PC RC
Windows XP Mode RC
SafeNet SoftRemoteLt installed on Virtual Windows XP.
These instructions should work for other clients as well.
Make sure Internet and VPN is working.

(Windows Virtual PC RC and Windows XP Mode RC can be downloaded from here.)

There are several things we need to configure on both Windows 7 (host) and Windows XP Mode (guest):

Add a Loopback adapter to the host.
Configure the Loopback adapter.
Add a Virtual adapter to the guest.
Configure the Virtual adapter.
Disable Internet Connection Sharing and Firewall on the guest.
Enable routing on the guest.
Configure routing on the guest.
Configure routing on the host.

Let’s get started then.

Add a Loopback adapter to the host

For the host to utilize the VPN located on the guest we need more than unidirectional communication.
VPN traffic goes from the host to the guest, thrugh the VPN and out on the Internet.
When receiving data the guest needs to be able to route it back to the host.
Therefor we need another communication channel.

Open up Device Manager and right click the root node.
Select “Add Legacy Hardware” then click “Next”.
Select “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)” and click “Next”.
Select “Network Adapters” then click “Next”.
In the left pane select “Microsoft”.
In the right pane select “Microsoft Loopback Adapter” then click “Next”.
On the confirmation screen click “Next”.
When the installation is finished, click “Finish”.

Now you should have a new network adapter in the Network Connections.

Configure the Loopback adapter

Now it’s time to choose a subnet and IP address for your network connection.
I chose a subnet that wouldn’t collide with my home or work networks.

192.168.199.199 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Open up the Network Connections.
Find the new network adapter.
Mine is called “Local Area Connection 4″.
Right click the icon and select “Properties”.
Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” then click “Properties”.
Select “Use the following IP address”.
Enter the IP address and subnet mask and click “OK”.
Click “OK”.

We’re almost done configuring the host. However, before we can finish we will configure the guest.

Add a Virtual adapter to the guest

Before we start you’ll need to shut down Windows XP Mode completely. Hibernation will not work.

Open up Virtual Machines.
Select “Windows XP Mode”.
Click “Settings”.
Select “Networking”.
Set the number of network adapters to 2.
For the second adapter, select “Microsoft Loopback Adapter” then click “OK”.

Moving on…

Configure the Virtual adapter

For the Virtual Adapter we should now choose an IP address in the same range as we chose before:

192.168.199.200 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Start Windows XP Mode.
Open up Network Connections.

You should now see two connections. Mine are called “Local Area Connection” and “Local Area Connection 2″.
The first one is your “Internet Connection” and the second one is the “Loopback Connection”.

Right click your “Loopback Connection” then select “Properties”.
Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click “Properties”.
Select “Use the following IP address”.
Enter the IP address and subnet mask and click “OK”.
Click “OK”.

Disable Internet Connection Sharing and Firewall on the guest

We need to create or own routing and we do not want windows to interfere with our setup.

Open “Services”.
Find “Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)”.
Right click the node and select “Properties”.
Set “Startup type” to “Disabled” then click “Stop”.
Click “OK”.

Don’t close “Services” just yet.

Enable routing on the guest

To enable routing we need to do two things:

Start RegEdit.
Find the key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\IPEnableRouter”
The default value should be “0×00000000″, change it to “0×00000001″.
Close RegEdit.
Back in “Services” find “Routing and Remote Access”.
Right click the node and select “Properties”.
Set “Startup type” to “Automatic” then click “Start”.
Click “OK”.

You may now close “Services”.
At this point you might need to restart Windows XP Mode.

Configure routing on the guest

In this step we’ll set up the routing needed for the host to be able to communicate through the guests VPN.

Start a “Command Prompt”.
Enter “netsh routing ip nat install”.
This will install NAT routing.
Enter “netsh routing ip nat add interface “Local Area Connection” full”.
This will route traffic through your “Internet Connection”.
Enter “netsh routing ip nat add interface “Local Area Connection 2″ private”.
This will route traffic through your “Loopback Connection”.

Guest is done! Only one more thing to do.

Configure routing on the host

You’ll need to know which subnet your VPN network is using.
We will configure the routing so that all traffic meant for your VPN network goes through the “Loopback adapter”.
Let’s say your VPN subnet is

172.16.16.0 with netmask 255.255.255.0

Start a “Command Prompt” as Administrator. (Run as Administrator).
Enter “route -p add 172.16.16.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.199.200″
Note that 192.168.199.200 is the IP address of the guests Virtual Adapter we set earlier.

All done.

From now on all you need to do is start SoftRemoteLt from the “Windows Virtual PC” folder in the Start Menu and you’re all set.

前两天在同事的帮助下用Liunx的命令帮另一同事搞定了一个小需求，使他们的工作更方便了。让我觉得Liunx�Q�Unix的命令太强大了，所以我惌��好好的学�?f��n)一下，�׃��每周要做的事情比较多�Q�就规定自己每周学习(f��n)一个命令好了�?br />��像帮我的那位同事说的一��P��没事他就在AIX下用man来一个个的看�q�些命��o(h��)�Q�我觉得�q�个�Ҏ(gu��)��好，先试着采用一下，然后再来解决一些问题�?br />

�q�周先从ls命��o(h��)学�v�Q�正好早上也在帮同事用这个命令解决问题�?br />以下是比较有用的一些操作：(x��)
ls -lS 按文件的大小排序
ls -lS --block-size=1K ��文件信息以K为大��单位排序列�?br />ls -F 文�g后面跟一个类型符�Q��?”表�C�可执行的普通文�Ӟ��?”表�C�目录；“@”表�C�符号链接；“|”表�C�FIFOs�Q��?”表�C�套接字(sockets)�Q?br />

最�q�用WebLogic�Q�所以就需要用一些命令来启动WebLogic�?br />我们知道启动WebLogic一般用 startWebLogic.sh命��o(h��)�Q�这个命令执行后�Q�W(xu��)ebLogic的Log��׃��(x��)出现在Shell�H�口中，而且�q�样的话�Q�不能关闭这个Shell�q�程�Q�一关闭的话��׃��(x��)shutdown掉整个WLS�?br />
在Ubuntu中，我用以下命��o(h��)来解册��个问题：(x��)
nohup ./startWebLogic.sh >>t.log &

可是�Q�我在SunOS中，用这个命令可不�v作用了。��L��提示“已�l�输出到nohup.out中�?br />我只好用以下命��o(h��)来搞定：(x��)
./startWebLogic.sh >>t.log

然后�Q�我可以�?br />tail -f t.log
�q�个命��o(h��)来查看LOG�?br />
各位兄弟姐妹们知道�ؓ(f��)什么在SunOS中，nohup不�v作用吗？

好久没有写BLOG了，�q�段旉��实太忙�Q�要做的事情很多�Q�而且很费心，要学的东西也很多�Q�而且都是很难学和难掌握的�Q�像什么PMBOK�Q�PSP�Q�PSPBOK�Q�PCB�{�等 �Q�有些甚至以前连�q�个词都没有听说�q��?br />
今天折腾了一天，到现在已�l�是晚上十点了，�l�于在我工作的机子上装上了FC6�Q�我的机子是ACER的品牌机�Q�SATA的硬盘，USB的键盘鼠标，所以很多Linux的版本是不能用的�Q�比如同事带的RedHat9��是不支持SATA的，上午折腾了大半早上，��只弄清楚了�q�个问题�Q�所以马上去下蝲FC6�Q�由于公司的�|�络是有��锁的，�q�好我用的这个IP不是全封�Q�找了好久才扑ֈ�一个可用的下蝲地址�Q�那下蝲速度可真是慢呀�?br />
��C��晚上下班的时候，�l�于快下完了�Q�可以发现现在的版本的中再也不带以往常用的DOS启动的文件了�Q�去�|�上查了些资料，�l�于弄清楚怎么安装了。简要记录如下：(x��)

1、先去SF.NET上下载一个WINGRUB�Q�当焉��要你的系�l�中有一个XP或是2000的系�l�，安装很简单，配置也超��单，W(xu��)indows下这点还是蛮好的�Q�这里不再多��_(d��)��保你的�pȝ��能用GRUB的方式启动就好了�?br />2、用一个虚拟光�׃��cȝ��软�g把你下蝲的ISO文�g�W�一张盘的isolinux目录下的vmlinuz和initrd.img两个文�gCOPY到C盘的根目录（当然其它目录也可以，不过�?�?x��)儿在启动FC的安装程序的时候自��p��得改下地址��好了）(j��)�?br />3、重启系�l�，�q�时你会(x��)看到GRUB的启动菜单，按“C”键�Q�进入GRUB的命令行�?br />4、键入以下命令：(x��)
    GRUB>kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz
    GRUB>initrd (hd0,0)/initrd.img
    GRUB>boot
5、OK�Q�顺利进入FC6的安装程序，你可以选择语言和安装程序的位置�?br />
