reinventing the wheel:
+ require 'find'
+ IO.readlines(path).size

inefficient:
+ append to arrays, not strings ( a = []; a << ...; a.join )
+ don't create a million regexp objects in a tight loop when one will do ($fileReg = /#{...}/; fileName =~ $fileReg)
