Cream 被廣泛用于指代事物的精華，cream of the crop解釋成best of the crop應(yīng)該是非常符合邏輯的，而且這個(gè)短語(yǔ)的起源確實(shí)和莊稼有關(guān)系。1891年10月出版的the Overland Monthly and Out West Magazine上的一段話(huà)可以作為證據(jù): "The great and unfailing demand that the canneries have made for California fruit has been largely a moving cause of this change from wheat fields to orchards, for the canneries take the very cream of the crop." 現(xiàn)在，best of the crop已經(jīng)不僅僅局限于best of the crop的意思了。實(shí)際上，用短語(yǔ)bet of the crop來(lái)形容畢業(yè)生、大學(xué)生、政治舞臺(tái)上的候選人以及士兵這樣的有不同屆、級(jí)之分的群體中的優(yōu)秀人物是最適合的，例如: "The cream of the college crop is always just around the corner" (摘自《2001年舊金山年鑒》)， 值得注意的是，這個(gè)句子的動(dòng)詞用的是單數(shù)形式。
