這是一首面臨死亡的人的遺囑詩，向他一生和自己分享歡樂悲傷的愛人朋友甚至情敵道別，囑咐他們照顧好自己的妻子。。。

就在73年英文翻唱推出之前，Jacques Brel 在他歌唱生涯巔峰之時宣布退休，全球歌迷震驚了，但詩人沒有給出任何解釋。之后平靜的六年，Jacques Brel 和癌癥做著最后的斗爭，終于不幸在1978年10月9日被病魔吞噬。讓人不禁想起他生前的這首《垂死者》。

三個人，我們姑且稱他們為A、B、C。在50年代的法國鄉村，他們是同一所高中的同
學。A和C是從小一起長大的、最要好的朋友，B是漂亮的女孩。通常在這種故事里，
我們很容易想象發生了什么事情，A和C同時愛上了B。A是那種很陽光、很樂觀、很拉
風的男孩，是學校的運動明星，是很多情竇初開的少女仰慕的對象。生活對于A來說
充滿的只是快樂和單純。而C害羞、內斂，畫得一手好畫。早在A和B相愛之前，C已經
默默的愛了B很久，但是沒有人知道。這份愛被藏在心底，直到畢業后A參軍、C成為
一名木匠，直到戰后A返回家鄉和B結婚，直到婚后A找到工作當上一名貨車司機……
A經常離家工作很長時間，B打理著外婆留下的鄉村雜貨店，有太多的事情需要男人的
幫忙，C就這樣擔負起了照顧年輕的母女的責任。天長日久，大家都想象得到的事情
就那樣發生了。A樂觀的天性加上對妻子的愛、對摯友的信任使他對此茫然無知。直
到一個大雪封路的冬天，A在出車的半夜折返家中，發現了一切……面對驟然被生命
中最重要的兩個人出賣這個難以接受的事實，A失去控制殺死了他們。當天深夜，A向
警察局自首，兩個月后被判一級謀殺罪名成立，于第二年初春執行死刑。在死刑執行
前的第三天，A在獄中寫了三段話，分別寫給他最好的朋友C、他的父親和他四歲的女
兒。在即將離開人世的時刻，他仍然將C看作最好的、生命中最值得信賴的朋友。
這個A，叫做Jacques Brel。他寫下的這段話最初的名字叫"Le Moribund"，直譯的意
思是"the dying man"。Rod McKuen將之翻譯成英語，并套上一首法語歌的旋律，這
就是最初的"seasons in the sun"。十年后，Terry Jacks無意中聽到了這首歌，經
過他的演繹，歌曲從此紅遍全球，被很多很多人翻唱，其中最著名的就是westlife。
只要稍稍想到那個三天后就要離去的人是以怎樣的心情在懷念活著的幸福、告別自己年邁的父親和四歲的女兒，只要稍稍想到他的父親和女兒在看到這些話時心中劇烈的激蕩……我無言。Jacques Brel用美好的筆調歌頌生命的多彩和絢爛，卻讓聆聽的人更加忍不住潸然淚下。對比Terry和westlife的版本，顯然westlife的音樂制作要好很多，但從表現一個真正面臨死亡的人的心境來說，我喜歡Terry，也更能理解為什么歌中反復強調：It's hard to die.
